Contour line drawing is a type of drawing that uses a free flowing line that defines an outside edge as well as interior details of an object.

If you are looking to strengthen your drawing skills, using contour line drawing is an excellent way to build your drawing skills. Because you are focusing on the outside outlines or contours and the inside details of an object we don’t worry about shading.

in addition to outlines and internal shapes, the pencil must move back and forth across the surface of the paper, with lines doubling back on each other, so that the drawing is one free-flowing, unbroken line. I stress not using an eraser while drawing with contour line. To avoid wanting to erase lines, I suggest doing contour line drawing with an ink pen. Contour line drawing with pen and ink not only develops confidence and drawing speed, but it encourages your eyes and hand and brain to work together.

Blind Contour Line Drawing                      Regular Contour Line Drawing

A blind contour line drawing contains lines that are drawn without ever looking at the piece of paper. This forces you to study the object you are drawing very closely. The goal is to have our hand draw these on paper. The aim is not to produce a realistic artwork, but rather to strengthen the connection between eyes, hand and brain. This teaches us to draw what we actually see and not what we think we see.
